Diosmin( 7-[[6-O-(6-Deoxy--L-mannopyranosyl)--D-glucopyranosyl]oxy]-5-hydroxy-2-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one), also called diosmetin 7--rutinoside; barosmin; buchu resin.
Diosmin is greyish-yellow or light yellow hygroscopic powder, practically insoluble in water and alcohol, soluble in dimethyl sulphoxide. It dissolves in dilute solutions of alkali hydroxides.
Diosmin is a natural ingredient derived from hesperidin that has been extracted from citrus fruits (commonly the peels of sweet oranges), a member of the flavonoid family. Diosmin was first isolated in 1925, and first introduced as a therapeutic agent in 1969. Diosmin is a prescription medication in some European countries, and is sold as a nutritional supplement in the United States and the rest of Europe.
It is used in the treatment of acute or chronic venous insufficiency, hemorrhoids, lymphedema, and varicose veins. Due to its beneficial effects, diosmin is offered as a prescription drug in some areas of Europe but remains an herbal supplement in the United States.
Diosmin and Hesperidin
Diosmin can be manufactured by extracting hesperidin from citrus rinds, followed by conversion of hesperidin to diosmin. Furthermore, diosmin with hesperidine decreases the diameter of lymphatic capillaries and the intralymphatic pressure.
Diosmin is largely used in EU as a medicine in combination with Hesperidine. The formulation of Dismin 90%+Hesperidin 10% branded Alvenor by famous Servier has an annual sales of millions of dollars in EU. But FDA does not approve it as a medicine but a dietary supplement. Recently a new formulation of Diosmin 95%+Hesperidin 5% has been also approved by EU countries and FDA.
Nowadays more companies in other countries also launched similar products as the same proportion of Diosmin and Hesperidine, whatever it is used as a medicine or dietary supplement, Diosmin has been well acknowledged to be a vascular-protecting agent used to treat chronic venous insufficiency, hemorrhoids, lymphedema, and varicose veins.
How Diosmin Works
Diosmin's mechanisms of action include improvement of venous tone, increased lymphatic drainage, protection of capillary bed microcirculation, inhibition of inflammatory reactions, and reduced capillary permeability. Certain flavonoids, including diosmin, are potent inhibitors of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and thromboxane A2 (TxA2) as well as being inhibitors of leukocyte activation, migration, and adhesion. Diosmin causes a significant decrease in plasma levels of endothelial adhesion molecules and reduces neutrophil activation, thus providing protection against microcirculatory damage.
What are the Benefits of taking Diosmin?
Diosmin is considered to be a vascular-protecting agent used to treat chronic venous insufficiency, hemorrhoids, lymphedema, and varicose veins. As a flavonoid, diosmin also exhibits anti-inflammatory,free-radical scavenging, and antimutagenic properties. Diosmin has been used as a phlebotonic and vascular-protecting agent, and has recently begun to be investigated for other therapeutic purposes, including cancer, premenstrual syndrome, colitis, and diabetes:
Diosmin venous insufficiency
Chronic venous insufficiency is characterized by pain, leg heaviness, a sensation of swelling, and cramps, and is correlated with varicose veins. Healthy veins and good circulation are critical to good health. Unfortunately, as we grow older veins often become weaker. This is most often due to aging, certain lifestyle behaviors (smoking, being sedentary, and/or being overweight), and genetics.
Diosmin-containing flavonoid mixtures have also been effective in treating severe stages of chronic venous insufficiency, including venous ulceration and delayed healing.
Some studies show that diosmin may be beneficial in treating common vein ailments due to its high concentration of flavonoids. The flavonoids are believed to strengthen the circulatory system by increasing venous tone, decreasing inflammation, and protecting capillaries.
Diosmin Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are basically varicose veins located in a very unfortunate place. They occur when pressure is exerted on the veins that surround the anus (due to straining during a bowel movement, childbirth/pregnancy, or bowel problems), causing them to swell. Hemorrhoids are known to cause bleeding (sometimes severe), and tortuous pain. Because of its positive effects on vein health, diosmin may help prevent and treat hemorrhoids.
Several large clinical trials have demonstrated diosmin to be effective in the treatment of acute and chronic symptoms of hemorrhoids.
Also the use of diosmin in the treatment of hemorrhoids associated with pregnancy did not adversely affect pregnancy, fetal development, birth weight, infant growth, or infant feeding. Pregnant women suffering from acute hemorrhoids were treated eight weeks before delivery and four weeks after delivery. More than half of the women participating in the study reported relief from symptoms by the fourth day. Diosmin is non-mutagenic and does not have any significant effect on reproductive function.
Diosmin Lymphedema
Diosmin supplementation has been shown to help reduce lymphedema in the arms following breast cancer surgery.
Diosmin acts on the lymphatic system by increasing lymph flow and lymph oncotic pressure. A flavonoid mixture containing diosmin was used to treat upper limb lymphedema secondary to conventional therapy for breast cancer. Results showed improvement of symptoms and limb volume; the mean decrease in volume of the swollen limb reached 6.8 percent. In addition, lymphatic functional parameters assessed with scintigraphy were significantly improved. Animal studies of high-protein lymphedema, such as in burns and lung contusions, showed significant improvement with diosmin.
Diosmin Varicose veins
Varicose veins are one of the most common and most annoying venous problems. They're caused when vein walls become weak allowing blood to pool. This pooling causes bulging and creates a varicose vein. While some varicose veins are simply an eyesore, others are extremely painful and can lead to serious complications such as deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot). It's believed that diosmin's ability to improve vascular tone may help reduce or even prevent uncomfortable varicose vein symptoms such as swelling, pain, and heaviness.
Other Benefits of taking Diosmin
As a flavonoid, diosmin also exhibits anti-inflammatory, free-radical scavenging, and antimutagenic properties. Using diosmin, especially in conjunction with healthy lifestyle behaviors such as regular exercise, not smoking, and eating a healthy diet, may help improve vein and circulatory function and relieve uncomfortable symptoms.
Dosages of Diosmin
Diosmin is always supplemented in combination with hesperidin.
The dose of diosmin recommended depends on the condition being treated. It is said
for hemorrhoids, 1350mg of diosmin is combined with 150mg hesperidin twice daily for four days, followed by 900mg diosmin combined with 100mg hesperidin twice daily for three days. To prevent relapse of these hemorrhoids 450mg of diosmin with 50mg of hesperidin is used twice daily for 3 months. This last dosing combination is the one that has also been used to treat skin ulcers due to poor venous blood flow in the leg, and lymphedema.
Generally, the standard dose of diosmin is 500 mg twice daily. For acute dosing, a loading dose of 1,000 mg three times daily for four days is recommended, followed by 1,000 mg twice daily for three days, and a maintenance dose of 500 mg twice daily for two months.
Side Effects and Safety of Diosmin
It is said diosmin is non-toxic and appears to be safe. One company that markets diosmin supplements, Nutratech, has responded that diosmin can reasonably be expected to be safe on the basis of clinical trials, and has a long history of use in Europe.
But there are some indications that caution should be taken when taking diosmin with calcium channel blockers or blood thinners. As always, before using any alternative therapy (especially if you're pregnant or breast feeding), you should consult your doctor or medical professional.
Also potential side effects associated with diosmin and hesperidin include headache, stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea. Serious side affects may include chest pain, difficulty breathing, skin rash, itching, swelling of the hands or face, or tingling in the mouth.
